A King County city is responding to the theft of pride flags from businesses for the second time in a 10-day span.
Carnation city officials said the first incident happened early on June 17, when someone ripped pride flags from their poles downtown, resulting in damaged storefronts. Within hours, "community members replaced the stolen property, and the flags were up again," according to the city.
A similar incident occurred on Tuesday, when a few businesses were targeted, the city said.
Officials reported the incidents to the King County Sheriff's Office as well at the Department of Justice at the federal and state level, the city said.
“The people of Carnation have demonstrated incredible love and support for our businesses and the LGBTQIA+ community,” Deputy Mayor Tim Harris said in a press release. “We are working with local and state authorities to investigate these incidents and will prosecute them to the fullest extent possible. Carnation is a city where diversity is celebrated, and all are welcome. Hate has no place here.”
