Two teenagers who overdosed from a fentanyl-laced vape pen in Bellevue earlier this week have been unable to assist police on tracking down who provided the drug, , according to investigators.

Both boys, who are 18 and 17 years old, remain hospitalized at Overlake Medical Center. One of the youths remains in intensive care with a life-threatening injury, so detectives have not had a change to question him.

"The other one was only able to give us very limited details because he has been in and out of consciousness," said Bellevue Police Capt. Joe Nault.

The message police want to emphasize for other families is that buying drugs from anyone other than a doctor or pharmacy is unsafe and could have deadly consequences.

"The message I have for parents and teens is that you don't know what you're taking," Nault said. "You don't know what somebody is handing you is legitimate and safe even if it's a person you trust because that person doesn't know where they got it from."

Because of the boys’ extreme medical conditions, investigators are not yet sure if they knew fentanyl was in the pen, or thought they were inhaling another substance.

Police said they will make every attempt to track down drug dealers and arrest them, but those leads might not come until the teens have recovered and they can be more thoroughly questioned.

“If we can find out where they got it at some point, we'll pursue that but we may not get that information,” Nault said. “The primary concern for us is their health and safety.”
